Review & Description

In days of old when knights were bold … a noble knight, riding in the far north of England stops to refresh himself by a pool. There he meets, not one unexpected visitor, but two. One threatens his life, the other ... is a young woman who will make him forget that he ever had to carry a message for the king.

A sexy short story from Charlotte Jones, author of Pleasure Princess.

About 5,000 words.

Excerpt:

Three long days in the saddle had rubbed his arse red raw. Lance could take no more. He reined up by a stream that ran along the edge of a wood, and saw where a deep pool had formed. It was too good to resist. He tied Bramley under the shade of an oak tree and let him graze. Bramley snorted contentedly.

Taking off his armor without his esquire's help was awkward but Lance managed, twisting this way and that until he'd unbuckled all the straps. He dumped the iron plates and his long chain mail tunic beside a rock, along with his sword. He shrugged off his flaxen shirt, kicked off his boots, untied his sweaty codpiece and lowered himself into the pool. The shocking chill made his cock shrink to half its size. He laughed, until the thought dawned that it might not regain its former length again. But that was a nonsense; it was just the cold. He enjoyed the soothing relief the pool brought, and the warmth of the sunshine on his body from the waist up.

He washed his codpiece, twisted the water out of it and threw it towards the rock. A brawny hand snatched it out of the air before it landed. Lance looked up to see a snarling monster that must surely be born of foul sorcery. But then he made better sense of what he was seeing. The fierce eyes of a red-bearded Pict warrior stared back at him. The warrior wore a bear's head, a black fur cloak, and a necklace of bear claws.

"This is my land, this is my stream, and that is my pool," the warrior said.

Lyric River (Kindle Edition)

Review & Description

Lyric River's Ben Wallace is a skeptic, but he doesn’t mind renting his attic room to someone claiming to be God, especially since this God is troubled by his own grave doubts. Ben does not even mind that God mooches beer from the refrigerator and is indifferent about paying the rent. Ben is less concerned with God’s aggravating ways than he is with figuring out how it might be okay to leave one woman he loves for another woman he loves. He is not at all concerned with continuing as single parent to his daughter—with this, he is a natural.

Ben, stubborn, smart-ass child of the South, once again separated from his wife, moves to a small Colorado ski town with Sarah, his nine-year-old daughter. Ben’s marriage to Karen, volatile, ambitious child of the city, is fraying, and the unraveling quickens when he meets Megan, serene child of the mountains, child of a crazy, murdered father. Ben navigates the end of his relationship with Karen, the rearing of Sarah, and the falling in love with Megan. Ben lives in a resort town, but his is the family of working locals, people who belong in the mountains, not the world of tourists or Trustafarians.

Typical small-town characters include George, contrarian newspaper editor, who spends his evenings in the Moose Jaw, drinking beer and arguing, if necessary, against his own editorials. Billy, the largest man in the county, dropped out of high school to drive a snowplow, and wanders the mountains, looking for the footprints of Thoreau and the secrets of Megan’s childhood. Iris, Ben’s rich, imperious neighbor, descendent of ranchers, loves Ben and Sarah and Megan; Iris also loves to hit anyone who vexes her over the head with a beer bottle; Iris is sorely vexed by Megan’s brother, Tyler, who follows dangerously in their father’s religiously demented footsteps. Tyler violently opposes the relationship between Ben and Megan, for reasons buried in their childhood. In the end, Ben and Megan are forced to journey into the abandoned mine that contains these childhood secrets; this exploration binds them together but ignites a tragic confrontation with Tyler.

"A lovely, romantic, and tragic novel…"…"luminous"…"the prose is drop-dead gorgeous"

Approximate values--225 pages, 111K words.

Tourmaline + Germanium + Silicon + Titanium

Negative ion is also known as longevity element, which serves as a magnet that attracts unwanted ions and neutralize them. This concept holds true similar to ionizers sold in pharmacies and in stores. Negative ion can relieve fatigue, promote blood circulation, and in some cases aid to faster metabolism.

Germanium health bracelets are equipped with both positive and negative fields that works to counteract the imbalance created by emissions from daily radiation such as cellphone, microwave, television, etc. reducing the harmful effects when exposed to these modern day devices.

Tourmaline is a crystal boron silicate mineral compounded with elements such as aluminium, iron, magnesium, sodium, lithium, or potassium. Tourmaline is classified as a semi-precious stone and the gem comes in a wide variety of colors.

Silicon is an essential element in biology. Silicon has many industrial uses. It is the principal component of most semiconductor devices, most importantly integrated circuits or microchips. Silicon is widely used in semiconductors because it remains a semiconductor at higher temperatures than the semiconductor germanium and because its native oxide is easily grown in a furnace and forms a good semiconductor interface. Review & Description

When Finn and her dog Skeeter set out on a hike to cure their restless feet, they literally take a step into nature. A big gooey step...right into scat (also known as poop). And just like the animal it comes from, scat comes in all shapes and sizes. Scat, along with foot or paw tracks, can tell a lot about the creature who produced it.

As Finn's hike takes her further into the woods, she happens along some scat and tracks from a variety of woodland creatures.

Pairing punchy rhyme with science writing, Lisa Morlock has created the perfect nature guide, providing detailed descriptions of the prints, diets, and behaviors of the animals that Finn and Skeeter encounter along their hike.

Watch your step!

Review & Description

Farmers and fanciers keep an astonishing variety of poultry breeds in North America. These birds provide meat and eggs to nourish us and feathers to keep us warm. Their quirky personalities and charming good looks make them barnyard favorites. They inspire passionate devotion from show breeders and provide a living for farmers.

Presented here, breed by breed, are more than 120 barnyard fowl — from chickens and turkeys to emus and pheasants. For each animal, readers will find stunning color photography, a brief history, and a detailed description. The identifying characteristics included for each breed are: class (standard and bantam); size (for cocks and hens); appearance of comb, wattles, and earlobes; color (everything from black-breasted red to silver laced); place of origin; conservation status; and special qualities (including longevity, size and quantity of eggs, quality of meat, and other relevant uses). Author Carol Ekarius provides enough information to satisfy both the dedicated browser and the serious farmer weighing the pros and cons of multiple breeds.

In 2005, Storey's Illustrated Guide to 96 Horse Breeds of North America celebrated horses in a coffee-table reference that captivated enthusiasts of all ages. Now farmers, breeders, backyard chicken keepers, and unabashed poultry fanatics will have a definitive guide of their own. If it's poultry — fair or fowl — it's in this book. Read more

Customer tags: construction, outdoors

Review & Description

Bare, stark swimming pools - those rectangular concrete holes in the ground surrounded by a chain-link fence - are going the way of the dinosaurs. Pool owners (and there are 7 million of them across North America) have begun to see the pool and the area around it as an outdoor living space, a place for entertaining a crowd or relaxing alone. In response to this hot, new trend, gardener and landscape designer Catriona Tudor Erler has written POOLSCAPING, a one-of-a-kind handbook overflowing with inspiring ideas and practical advice on how to make your swimming pool the lovely, welcoming centerpiece of your property.

Erler takes readers step by step through the poolscaping process, whether starting from scratch or renovating an existing pool. She begins with choosing the best location for the pool and designing (or refurbishing) the deck and edging that will surround it. She presents a host of ideas for dramatic pool lighting, including underwater options. The fencing chapter addresses choosing styles as well as safety issues and even how to disguise a fence with plantings.

Erler explores design options for building or renovating a spa adjacent to the pool, as well as how to incorporate furnishings, pergolas, and pool houses into the poolscape. A plant directory features the best poolside plants, with a focus on varieties of flowers, vines, and shrubs that are low maintenance and look attractive throughout the pool season. Erler also offers ideas for outstanding poolside planters and containers for bringing greenery and color right up to the pool.

Illustrated with beautiful full-color photographs of outstanding poolscapes, this unique guide demonstrates how any pool owner can transform the pool area into the showpiece of the neighborhood. Read more

Review & Description

The first book in a series, "A Sunny Day at Spring Pond," describes Herman the Turtle who faces many challenges with meeting new forest friends in a strange world that has a babbling creek, pea soup pond, and miniature canyon. However, with the help of Huey the Hummingbird and Mr. White Paws the Cat, Herman learns to like his new home and appreciate the good things in life, like basking in the sun. This story is based on a real nature sanctuary, Durward's Glen, where Herman was actually brought to live fifteen years ago. It contains inspiring messages about adjusting to change. Filled with beautiful photographs of Durward's Glen, this book is sure to be enjoyed by "children" young and old alike. Who Reads Fine Gardening?
Fine Gardening is written for gardeners who are passionate about their existing gardens, and are looking for ideas and inspiration for future gardening endeavors. Published six times a year, It presents readers with engaging information and gorgeous four-color photography, in a format that is both educational and accessible. While some gardening experience is assumed, and home ownership is usually implied, much of what is included in Fine Gardening will be of interest to anyone who feels the call to garden, of all levels of experience. You may find yourself saving issue after issue, since all are filled with valuable, practical information, and back issues are valued due to their seasonal nature.

What You Can Expect in Each Issue:

  • Tips: Reader-written, these tips are great for discovering new, and usually economical, ways to do what you’re probably already doing – but better and quicker. This is in addition to Over the Fence, the letters-to-the-editor section.
  • Plants to Know and Grow: Editor’s choice of unusual or new plants, called out for their foliage, growth patterns, and blooming. Also includes zone charts, ideal conditions, and what to feed them.

  • Healthy Garden: A monthly column devoted to fixing what ails your garden, including pest, diseases, and invasive species.

Contributors
Each issue includes a "Contributors" page, complete with concise biographies and some photos of the authors featured in that issue. The range is wide, but their passion for gardening unites them. Some of them are book authors, like Debra Prinzing, John Greenlee, and William Cullina. Others are garden and nursery owners, or curators/administrators of public or private gardens. Landscape designers and horticulturalists, including academics and professionals, round out the mix.

Magazine Layout
The editors strive for a clean, visually appealing layout, with gorgeous four-color photography included in just about every feature. Other helpful aspects to the layout include specific schematics for certain photographs, showing the name of each plant included in an arrangement. Overall, the layout is meant to be appealing, educational, and helpful to the reader.

Advertising
Advertisers are important to the readership of this magazine, since you’ll likely want to easily find the plants or tools that the editors are writing about. Included in each issues is an Advertiser’s Directory, featuring the page number of the advertiser and their website URL. The majority of advertising is specific to gardening, and include "Reader Service" numbers you can use to fill out an included information request card. Fine Gardening states that they "only accept advertisements for products and services that are directly related to gardening. No perfume ads. No irrelevant clutter," resulting in advertising that is "instructive, not intrusive." They succeed in providing relevant advertising for anyone who loves gardening.

Awards
The Garden Writers Association presented five of their Garden Globe Awards to Fine Gardening and their contributors in 2006.
